I am with Sunrise. So far I have had the FritzBox Router 7390 and everything was fine. I never had to forward a port and UPnP was deactivated on the router. I was always able to play online games with Steam.
Yesterday Sunrise sent me the newer model, the FritzBox 7490. The router web interface is identical. I hooked it up and internet works fine, except when I play games. I cannot play any online games anymore.
I tried Left 4 Dead 2. Connection always times out when joining server. Tried a dozen times.
I tried Rocket League, it gives me “Connection Lost” error message when joining a server. Strangely enough, when I try about 10 times, I manage to connect to a rando, server, but then when I leave, it takes another 10 - 15 attempts to join different servers.
Strangely enough some games like Counter-Strike and Black Ops 2 work, even though it takes about a minute to connect. (too bad I play neither of them, I just installed to test)
I then deactivated my AntiVirus (BitDefender) - No luck
I deactivated Windows Firewall - No Luck
On the router I then activated UPnP option - No luck
Then I forwarded all ports on the router to my PC (option is called “exposed host”), hoping this might work - no luck.
Nothing seems to work.
After hours and hours I hooked up the old Fritzbox 7390 router again and BAM I can play online again.
So either it’s a router issue, or my computer has a weird network setting when connecting to the new router.
I am not sure why the new router would make this issue, I have double checked all route settings and they are identical to the old router. Also, there are not really that many settings regarding network/firefall. It only allows for port forwarding or activate UPnP, which I both tried, and as mentioned, on the old router model, non of these options were required to play online games.
One thought that I had, was that when I first connected to the new router, just after typing in the password for the WiFi, it asked if this is public or private network, I think I might have clicked public by accident, but as far as I am aware, I thought I changed that at some stage after doing hours and hours of trouble shoot (I am running Windows 10). To make sure, how can I reset this public/private network option?
I tried to completely “forget” the new Network as well, hoping for a complete reset, but when I click “forget network” it simply asks me to re-enter the password and does not ask me about private or public network, so I assume the network is not fully “forgotten” and some settings are still saved.
I am not really sure where to look at this stage, if router or my PC.
Edit: I was reading that for the game Rocket League, the ports 7000-9000 need to be forwarded. I know I already used "Exposed Host" to forward ALL ports to my PC, but I am not sure of that option really worked. When try to forward the ports UDP 7000-9000 I get the error message ""Die Portfreigabe kann nicht erstellt oder aktiviert werden, da die Regel im Konflikt mit einer internen Regel steht."
It turns out FritzBox 7490 uses ports UDP-Ports 7078-7109 for Internettelefonie. Would this mean that if those ports are "fixed" I could never play a game that uses these ports?
I checked the older router and there I can forward these ports without the error message.... oh god, I am sooooo confused!
